Calgary currency signals: test the oil-and-dollar shortcut
Calgary Economic Development identifies energy, financial services and technology among the city’s key industries. Calgary Economic Development: Key industries
An energy headline can make a Canadian-dollar idea feel intuitive to a Calgary reader. That intuition is a hypothesis to investigate, not a complete signal. The proposed pair still needs its own explanation, timing and invalidation conditions.
Make the claimed connection explicit
Write down the argument linking the energy development to the currency pair. Identify the steps that are facts and the steps that are assumptions. Then consider another plausible influence, such as the policy information being discussed on the other side of the pair. This is a way to test a narrative, not a claim that any one factor always dominates.
For Canadian policy facts, use the Bank of Canada’s published rate information and decision schedule. Bank of Canada: Policy interest rate Do not let a market commentator’s expectation become a substitute for the source announcement.
Separate familiarity from risk capacity
A useful human-created signal should explain why the entry is valid now, when it would be cancelled and how an amendment will be delivered. If you already have financial exposure associated with the energy sector, note that context in your review instead of assuming a currency position automatically offsets it.
Try a historical paper exercise: write the energy thesis first, the pair-specific confirmation second and the reason to stand aside third. If the third field is impossible to complete, the idea may be too loosely defined. A signal becomes easier to evaluate when it permits a clear “no trade” decision.
Questions to bring to a signal review
- Which steps in the energy-to-currency story are assumptions?
- What other explanation should be tested?
- Why would I stand aside?
